Two More Ramsar Sites Announced

On the eve of World Wetland Day, Two New Ramsar Sites (Wetlands of International Importance), Khijadia Wildlife Sanctuary in Gujarat and Bakhira Wildlife Sanctuary in Uttar Pradesh, have been listed.
With this, now Gujarat has the third-highest number of Ramsar sites in India after 11 in UP and 6 in Punjab.
India currently has nearly 4.6% of its land as wetlands, covering an area of 15.26% million hectares and a network of 48 sites designated as Wetlands of International Importance, with a surface area of 10,93,636 hectares, the highest in South Asia.
Our Expression
The benefits are being harnessed based on three pillars of the convention- Work towards the wise use of all wetlands; Designate suitable wetlands for the Ramsar List; Cooperate internationally on trans boundary wetlands, shared systems, and shared species.
Whereas it is noteworthy that the Ramsar Convention is not legally binding i.e., it has no disciplinary sanctions for violations upon treaty commitments.
It is the sign of weakness in the steel frame thus it should be reformed, we should not forget- ‘Save the wetland and then we can think about saving the entire earth.’
